Why ConnectPrep

What Makes Our GRE Tutoring Different

Manhattan Prep is online-only. Kaplan requires 15-hour minimum packages. Princeton Review teaches to an average student in a group setting. ConnectPrep teaches 1:1 — every session built around exactly where your score is being lost, for students across Manhattan, Fairfield County, Westchester, New Jersey, and nationwide. See our results ›

1:1 Private — Always
Every session is private, built around your diagnostic scores, your weakest question types, and your target programs. No group calls, no generic curriculum. The tutor's full attention on you for every minute.
Section 1 Adaptive Strategy
The GRE is section-level adaptive. Section 1 accuracy unlocks a harder Section 2 and a higher score ceiling. Most students rush Section 1 to save time — a costly mistake. ConnectPrep coaches the exact pacing and prioritization that maximizes your adaptive advantage.
Verbal Mastery
GRE Verbal is the hardest section to improve through self-study alone. Text Completion, Sentence Equivalence, and Reading Comprehension each require distinct strategies. ConnectPrep coaches all three question types separately, including academic vocabulary strategy that most programs never address.
AWA Coaching Included
Most programs skip Analytical Writing because it's scored separately. ConnectPrep includes AWA in every program — because a 4.5+ matters for humanities, social sciences, and research-focused fields. It takes modest preparation and removes writing concerns from your application entirely.
Official ETS Materials Only
We use only official ETS full-length practice tests and question banks. Third-party GRE questions don't replicate the difficulty calibration or question style of the real exam. Official materials are non-negotiable in every ConnectPrep GRE program.
ScoreSelect Strategy
GRE's ScoreSelect feature lets you choose which test dates to send to programs. ConnectPrep advises students on exactly how to use ScoreSelect as part of their overall application strategy — including how many sittings to plan for and when to finalize.
2026 GRE Format

Three Sections. ~2 Hours. What We Coach in Each.

The shortened GRE launched September 2023 and runs approximately 1 hour 58 minutes — down from nearly 4 hours on the old format. Fewer questions means each one carries more weight. Here is exactly what each section tests and how ConnectPrep prepares for it.

Verbal
Verbal Reasoning
27 questions ~41 minutes 130–170
Two section-adaptive sections. Three question types: Reading Comprehension, Text Completion, and Sentence Equivalence. The most commonly underestimated section — students expect "just reading" and find the vocabulary and logic demands far harder. ConnectPrep coaches all three types separately before integrating under timed conditions.
Quant
Quantitative Reasoning
27 questions ~47 minutes 130–170
Two section-adaptive sections. Four question types: Quantitative Comparison, Problem Solving, Data Interpretation, Numeric Entry. Tests arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and data analysis — not advanced math. On-screen calculator available. ConnectPrep focuses on the specific question patterns that appear on official ETS tests and the time management techniques that matter most under the new shorter format.
AWA
Analytical Writing
1 essay 30 minutes 0–6 scale
Always comes first. One "Analyze an Issue" essay — you develop a position on a provided statement with reasoning and evidence. Scored 0–6 in half-point increments by a human rater and ETS's e-rater. Reported separately from the 260–340 total. ConnectPrep coaches the essay structure and argumentation framework that consistently earns 4.5–6.0.

Score Targets

What Score Do You Need? What ConnectPrep Targets.

The right GRE target depends entirely on your programs. ConnectPrep sets goals based on your specific school list, program type (PhD, master's, MBA), and overall application profile — not averages.

305+
~60th %ile
Competitive for many master's programs and professional graduate programs with a strong overall application.
Regional master's & professional programs
315+
~80th %ile
Competitive for most top-50 graduate programs and MBA programs at schools that accept the GRE.
Top-50 grad programs & MBA
325+
~92nd %ile
Competitive for highly selective PhD and master's programs and elite MBA programs accepting the GRE.
Top-20 programs & elite MBA
330+
~97th+ %ile
Competitive for Harvard, MIT, Stanford, Yale, and comparable programs across any field.
Top-10 programs — elite tier

Section balance matters: A 330 total with 170Q/160V reads differently at a STEM PhD program than a 165V/165Q split. STEM and quantitative programs weigh Quant heavily; humanities and social science programs weight Verbal and AWA closely. ConnectPrep builds section-specific targets alongside total score goals based on your program type.

Verbal Mastery

GRE Verbal — The Section Most Students Get Wrong

Students expect GRE Verbal to be "just reading." It isn't. Three distinct question types each require their own strategy, and academic vocabulary demands are higher than most expect. ConnectPrep coaches all three types separately before integrating under timed conditions — the approach that consistently moves Verbal scores 5–8 points.

RC
Reading Comprehension
Passages from humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences with multiple question types: main idea, author attitude, structure, inference, and highlighted-text. ConnectPrep teaches passage mapping — identify the central argument and paragraph role before attacking questions. The critical skill: distinguishing what the author actually argues from what merely seems true.
TC
Text Completion
Passages with one to three blanks. Multi-blank questions require all answers correct for any credit. ConnectPrep teaches a predict-then-match approach: generate your own word before looking at answer choices, then match meaning rather than sound or association. This eliminates the trap answers that sound right but contradict the passage logic.
SE
Sentence Equivalence
Single-sentence blanks requiring two choices that produce equivalent meanings — not just synonyms. Both choices must create logically equivalent sentences in context. ConnectPrep trains the meaning-equivalence check that separates the two correct answers from the four plausible-looking distractors. Choosing synonyms without context verification is the single most common SE error.
V
Vocabulary Strategy
GRE Verbal uses high-frequency academic vocabulary at a level that surprises most students. ConnectPrep builds vocabulary systematically — not through flashcard lists, but through word family maps, etymology patterns, and in-context practice that makes unfamiliar words deducible from roots and passage logic. Vocabulary is woven into every Verbal session from week one.

Our Instructors

The Tutors Behind Your GRE Score

Three instructors covering every section of the GRE — Quant, Verbal, and AWA. Each brings deep subject expertise and a consistent track record of moving graduate applicant scores in the sections they specialize in.

MR
GRE Quant
Marcus R.
GRE Quantitative Reasoning
M.S. Applied Mathematics — Columbia 9 years GRE & GMAT coaching QC · Data Interpretation · Problem Solving

Marcus built his coaching philosophy around one insight: GRE Quant tests reasoning, not computation. With a Columbia M.S. in Applied Mathematics and 9 years coaching graduate applicants, he breaks Quantitative Comparison, Data Interpretation, and Numeric Entry down to their structural patterns — so students stop calculating and start recognizing. Average client improvement: +9 Quant points in 8 weeks.

EV
Verbal & AWA
Elena V.
GRE Verbal & Analytical Writing
Ph.D. Comparative Literature — Yale 7 years graduate test coaching AWA Specialist · TC · SE · RC

Elena spent four years reading and writing at the exact register GRE Verbal demands before she ever coached it. Her Yale Ph.D. in Comparative Literature means she doesn’t just teach Text Completion and Sentence Equivalence — she inhabits the argument logic that generates the right answers. Students targeting 4.5+ AWA for programs in humanities, social sciences, and law seek her out specifically. Typical Verbal improvement: +6–8 points in 10 weeks.

DA
Verbal & Reading
Devon A.
GRE Verbal & Reading Strategy
B.A. Cognitive Science — Johns Hopkins M.A. Linguistics — Georgetown Reading Comprehension · Vocabulary Strategy

Devon’s background in cognitive science and linguistics makes him unusually effective at one of GRE prep’s hardest problems: why strong readers still lose Verbal points. He coaches students to read for argument structure rather than content — a shift that cuts time-per-passage and eliminates the interpretation traps that cost most students 3–5 points. Particularly effective with students stuck in the 150–158 Verbal range.

What is the GRE format in 2026?
The 2026 GRE runs approximately 1 hour 58 minutes with three sections. Analytical Writing: 1 "Analyze an Issue" essay, 30 minutes, scored 0–6. Verbal Reasoning: 27 questions, ~41 minutes, scored 130–170. Quantitative Reasoning: 27 questions, ~47 minutes, scored 130–170. Total score range: 260–340. The GRE is section-level adaptive — Section 1 of Verbal and Quant determines Section 2 difficulty. Official scores post 8–10 days after the test. Scores valid 5 years. Up to 5 sittings per 12-month period with a 21-day minimum between attempts.
What is a good GRE score for graduate school?
Average GRE scores run roughly 150 Verbal / 152 Quant (~302 combined). A 320+ is competitive for most top-50 graduate programs. A 325+ is competitive for highly selective PhD and master's programs. A 330+ is the target for Harvard, MIT, Stanford, and comparable elite programs. For MBA programs accepting the GRE, a 325–330 combined is generally competitive at M7 schools. ConnectPrep sets targets based on your specific school list and program type.
How does GRE adaptive scoring work?
The GRE uses section-level adaptivity. Section 1 of Verbal and Quant is moderate difficulty. Your performance determines whether Section 2 is the harder or easier version. The harder Section 2 unlocks a higher score ceiling. Section 1 accuracy is therefore disproportionately important — rushing Section 1 to bank time for Section 2 is the most common and costly GRE strategy error. ConnectPrep trains students specifically on Section 1 pacing and accuracy prioritization.
GRE vs. GMAT — which test is better for business school?
Most top MBA programs accept both. The GRE is better if you're also applying to non-business programs or if vocabulary-heavy verbal sections are a strength. The GMAT Focus Edition signals business school focus and has a structurally different Verbal section — no Sentence Correction. Students strong in reading and vocabulary sometimes score higher on the GRE. ConnectPrep offers free diagnostics on both to help you decide before investing in either prep program. See our GMAT prep page ›
How long does GRE prep take?
Most students need 8–12 weeks. ConnectPrep recommends sitting at least 3 months before your earliest application deadline — allowing time for score delivery (8–10 days) and a potential retake. You can retake the GRE once every 21 days, up to 5 times in any 12-month period. Scores are valid for 5 years, so many students take it earlier than needed to reduce pressure during application season.
What GRE question types should I focus on most?
It depends on your starting scores and target programs. For students weak in Verbal: Text Completion and Sentence Equivalence typically offer the highest-leverage improvements — they respond well to strategy coaching and vocabulary work. For Quant: Data Interpretation and Quantitative Comparison usually offer the most improvement room without requiring advanced math. ConnectPrep's free diagnostic identifies exactly which question types are pulling your score down before any program begins.
Does the AWA score matter for graduate school?
It depends on your program. Humanities, social sciences, law, and research-focused fields review AWA closely — a score below 4.0 can raise writing concerns. STEM and quantitative programs weight it less heavily. ConnectPrep includes AWA coaching in every GRE program because a 4.5+ requires only modest preparation and removes writing ability concerns from your application entirely.
Do you offer in-person GRE tutoring in Connecticut or New York?
