Study Skills & Academic Coaching

The Foundation for Every Subject,
Every Grade — K Through College.

Most students are never actually taught how to study. ConnectPrep’s 1:1 study skills coaching builds the executive function, time management, and academic habits that lift performance across every class — math, science, English, history, languages, and beyond. Pairs naturally with K–12 subject tutoring and test prep for the strongest possible program.

The ConnectPrep Difference

We Don’t Teach to the Test. We Teach How to Learn.

Test prep gets students through one exam. Study skills coaching changes how a student performs across every subject, every semester, for the rest of their academic life. That’s a fundamentally different investment.

Generic Tutoring & Cram Sessions

Fixes one problem. Leaves the rest.

Drills content for the upcoming test — then the student is back to square one next unit.
Homework gets done for the student — building dependence, not independence.
No structure for how the student organizes, plans, or studies on their own.
Parents see grades tick up on one test, then fall right back down without the tutor.
ConnectPrep Study Skills Coaching

Builds the student. For every class. Forever.

Teaches the student how to study so they can tackle any subject without help.
Builds time management and planning systems the student actually owns and uses daily.
Grades improve across every subject — not just the one that triggered the call.
The goal is a student who no longer needs us — that’s how we define success.

Hours studying, nothing sticks

Passive re-reading doesn’t work. We teach active recall and spaced repetition — techniques proven by learning science to double retention.

📝
Deadlines missed, backpack chaos

Poor organization isn’t a personality flaw — it’s a skill gap. We build planning systems and binder structures students actually use every day.

😨
Test anxiety, Sunday panic

Anxiety is almost always rooted in unpreparedness. Students who have a real plan walk into every exam differently — and their grades reflect it.

The ConnectPrep Framework

Four Core Skill Areas. One Lasting Transformation.

ConnectPrep’s Study Skills Coaching builds competence in four interconnected areas. Each builds on the others — and together they change how a student approaches every class, every assignment, and every exam for the rest of their academic life.

Goal Setting & Academic Planning

Students who set clear, structured goals consistently outperform those who don’t — not because they try harder, but because they direct their effort more effectively. ConnectPrep coaches guide each student through building SMART academic goals (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, Time-bound) that create a clear path forward for the semester and year ahead.

  • Semester and weekly goal architecture
  • Breaking large goals into actionable steps
  • Tracking progress and adjusting plans
  • Long-range academic roadmapping

Time Management & Organization

Overwhelm almost always comes from poor planning systems, not poor intelligence. We teach students how to build realistic weekly schedules, prioritize competing demands, manage extracurricular commitments alongside academics, and develop the organizational habits that reduce stress and keep them consistently on track.

  • Weekly planning and priority systems
  • Assignment tracking and deadline management
  • Balancing academics, activities, and rest
  • Digital and physical organizational tools

Note-Taking, Memory & Retention

How a student captures and processes information in class determines how well they perform on tests weeks later. ConnectPrep coaches teach evidence-based note-taking frameworks (Cornell Method, mind mapping, outline systems), active recall, spaced repetition, and mnemonics — matched to each student’s individual learning style.

  • Cornell notes, outline, and visual mapping
  • Active recall and spaced repetition
  • Mnemonic devices and memory techniques
  • Review and self-testing strategies

Responsibility, Mindset & Growth

Long-term academic success requires more than technique — it requires ownership. ConnectPrep coaches work with students on internal motivation, self-advocacy, communication with teachers, managing setbacks, and building the identity of a capable, independent learner. These are life skills that follow students long past graduation.

  • Self-advocacy and teacher communication
  • Growth mindset and resilience building
  • Handling academic setbacks constructively
  • Building independence and intrinsic motivation
Who We Work With

Every Student Has Untapped Potential. We Help Unlock It.

Study skills coaching isn’t just for struggling students — it’s for any student who wants to perform consistently at their best. We work with students across the full ability and grade spectrum.

The Overwhelmed Student

Falling behind, feeling buried, missing deadlines. This student needs systems and structure — and fast. We build the scaffolding so they can start catching up and staying up.

The High Achiever

Already doing well but working too hard for the results. Study skills coaching helps high-achievers work smarter, reduce burnout, and hit their ceilings — not their limits.

The College-Bound Junior or Senior

GPA, AP exams, and college essays are happening simultaneously. We help juniors and seniors manage the most demanding academic period of high school without losing momentum.

The Anxious or Avoidant Student

Test anxiety, procrastination, low academic confidence. ConnectPrep coaches address the emotional side of learning alongside the practical — because mindset and skills are equally important.

What Students Gain

Real Results. Measurable Change.

📈
Stronger grades across all subjects
Better study habits lift performance in every class — not just the one that triggered the call to ConnectPrep.
😄
More time to actually be a kid
Efficient study systems mean less wasted time — leaving room for sports, friends, and everything else that matters.
🏆
Higher confidence and self-esteem
When students feel competent and in control, it shows everywhere — in class participation, in relationships, and in how they carry themselves.
🏠
Better communication at home
Families tell us that homework battles and dinnertime stress drop significantly once their student has a system and a sense of ownership.
💪
Higher levels of intrinsic motivation
Students who understand how to learn start to enjoy it. Curiosity and drive follow mastery, not the other way around.
🤝
Reduced stress and test anxiety
Preparation eliminates most anxiety at its root. Students who are genuinely prepared walk into exams differently — and their results reflect it.
The Process

From First Session to Independent Learner

We move deliberately through a structured process designed to build lasting independence — not dependence on a tutor.

Step 01

Free Consultation

We talk with the student and family to understand current performance, specific struggles, and what success looks like. No pressure, no jargon — just an honest conversation.

Step 02

Skills Assessment

Your coach reviews how the student currently studies, organizes, and plans. We identify the specific skill gaps driving their current struggles — and prioritize them.

Step 03

Custom Plan & Sessions

Sessions are built around the student’s actual schedule, workload, and learning style. We introduce skills one by one, practice them together, and reinforce through real assignments.

Step 04

Independence & Results

The goal is a student who no longer needs us. Grades improve, stress drops, and families see a measurable difference in how their student approaches school.

Study Skills Is Often the Foundation.
These Programs Build on Top of It.

Many ConnectPrep families combine study skills coaching with subject tutoring, test prep, or executive function support for the most complete and lasting program possible.

K–12 Subject Tutoring

Study skills coaching plus targeted subject help is the most powerful combination. Better habits lift performance across all subjects; a subject tutor closes the specific content gaps.

Executive Function & Special Education Coaching

For students with ADHD, executive function challenges, or IEPs, we offer specialized coaching that goes meaningfully deeper than general study skills — addressing the root causes of academic struggle.

Executive Function Coaching →

College Admissions Counseling

Junior and senior year students benefit most when strong academic habits are paired with real college planning. We help students manage the most demanding stretch of high school without letting GPA slip.

SAT & ACT Test Prep

Strong study habits make test prep dramatically more effective. Students who already know how to learn absorb new strategies faster, retain content longer, and walk into test day with real confidence — not panic.

“ConnectPrep and my tutor Mary were a true game changer. I was struggling in AP Chemistry and AP Calculus BC but Mary made the material click. She explained complex concepts with patience and helped me move beyond memorizing to real understanding. The 5s I earned on both exams were because of her support. In APUSH and AP Lang, Wendy showed me how to build strong arguments and make my writing more impactful.”

Is study skills coaching only for students who are struggling?
Not at all. Some of our most impactful coaching is with students who are already doing well but working inefficiently. High-achievers often benefit enormously from learning to study smarter — reducing stress, preventing burnout, and unlocking higher performance without more hours.
What grade levels do you serve?
ConnectPrep works with students from 4th grade through college. The skills we teach scale appropriately — elementary students get foundational habits, middle schoolers get organizational systems, and high school and college students get advanced study, test, and planning strategies.
How is this different from regular tutoring?
Subject tutoring solves the “what” — understanding specific content. Study skills coaching solves the “how” — how to learn, how to organize, how to manage time, and how to perform under pressure. Many students need both. We offer both, and can integrate them into one cohesive program.
Are sessions in person or online?
Both. In-person sessions are available throughout Fairfield County CT, Westchester NY, Nassau and Suffolk Counties NY, and Manhattan. Online sessions are fully live and interactive, available nationwide. Both formats are equally effective.
How long does it take to see results?
Most families notice a change in attitude and organization within the first 2–3 weeks. Grade improvements typically follow within 4–6 weeks as new habits take hold. The goal is lasting independence, which typically develops over a semester of consistent coaching.
How much does study skills coaching cost?
Coaching is priced per session and depends on grade level, session frequency, and whether it’s combined with subject tutoring or test prep (SAT, ACT, AP). Most families start with weekly sessions over a semester. We’ll quote a tailored plan after the free consultation — no commitment required.
Do you work with students who have ADHD or executive function challenges?
Yes — many of our students have ADHD, executive function differences, or learning differences. For students with formal diagnoses or IEPs/504 plans, our Executive Function & Special Education Coaching program goes meaningfully deeper than general study skills, addressing root causes rather than symptoms.

Give Your Student the Skills That Last a Lifetime.

A free consultation is the first step. We’ll listen, assess the situation honestly, and tell you exactly how we can help — before you commit to anything.
